Select a payment method

You can control exactly which payment methods your firm accepts—bank debit, debit card, and credit card—and whether to accept American Express separately. Bank debit is usually cheaper for you, while cards may be more convenient for your clients.

Note

To be able to select payment methods, set up the payment integration first. When you connect a payment provider, TaxDome automatically turns on every payment method that provider supports—for both your firm settings and your existing invoices, recurring invoices, and proposals—so you don’t need to manually re-enable anything after connecting.

Select payment method

To select the payment methods you accept, go to the Payments tab of the Settings > Integrations page, then select the checkboxes for the methods you want to accept: Bank debit, Debit card, and Credit card. At least one method must stay selected.

Under the card checkboxes, an Accept American Express cards toggle lets you accept or decline American Express separately, without affecting your Debit card and Credit card settings.

This can be done only by a firm owner or admin .

When you save a change that removes a method, TaxDome warns you that the method will be removed from every invoice, recurring invoice, proposal, and template that currently allows it. When you save a change that adds a method, you can choose to also apply it to your prepayment & deposit settings , your templates, or all unpaid invoices, recurring invoices, and proposals—leave these unchecked to apply the new method only going forward.

New invoices, recurring invoices, and proposals are created with all your firm’s active payment methods pre-selected—you can narrow the selection per item. If you later turn off a method at the firm level, any item that already had it selected keeps it as an option, so you’re not forced to drop your existing setup.

If you enable prepayment , the same Bank debit, Debit card, Credit card checkboxes and American Express toggle appear under Prepayment & deposit. A method can only be active for prepayment if it’s also active in your main payment method settings—if you turn off a method there, it’s automatically turned off for prepayment too.

Additional payment methods

When card payments are enabled, clients may also see the following options on the payment page:

  • Apple Pay—available in Safari on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, in Chrome on Mac, and in the client mobile app on iOS. Apple Pay is only available with TaxDome Payments .

  • Google Pay—available in most browsers on desktop when the client is signed in to their Google account. In Safari, an active Google session is required (e.g., logged in to Gmail). On Android, available in Chrome.

  • Link—a Stripe service that lets clients save their payment details for one-click checkout, across TaxDome and other websites that support Link.

These options cannot be enabled or disabled independently from card payments. If a client doesn’t see Apple Pay or Google Pay, it’s likely due to their browser, device, or Google account not being active in that session.

How saved payment methods work

When a client pays an invoice through the client portal, their payment details are automatically saved. This allows faster checkout on future invoices—clients can select a saved method instead of re-entering their details. Firms can charge clients using their saved payment methods directly from TaxDome.

Firm owners, firm admins, and firm members with the Manage payments access right can also add and delete payment methods directly from the client’s profile. This functionality is currently available for Beta users.

Payment methods are securely tokenized, encrypted, and stored with Stripe—not in TaxDome. The client’s actual card number is never visible to your firm.
