Customize and maintain your terminal reader

This article covers customizing and maintaining a terminal reader . Most settings are managed in your Stripe dashboard; the screen timeout is set on the reader itself.

Rename a reader

In your Stripe dashboard, go to Terminal > Readers, click the reader, then click the three dots (⋯) > Rename.

Set a custom splash screen

The splash screen is what the reader shows between payments. You can replace the default Stripe screen with your firm’s branding:

1. In your Stripe dashboard, go to Terminal > Locations and click the location.

2. Under Inherited configurations, click Override next to Splash screen for your reader model—for example, Splash screen: Stripe Reader S700.

3. If this is the location’s first custom setting, enter a configuration name, then click Add.

4. Click Upload new, choose the image, then click Done.

5. Click Apply changes.

If the location already has its own splash screen, edit it under Local configurations instead.

Set it as an account default for all your readers, or per location to override the default. Use a JPG or PNG under 2 MB, cropped to the reader’s resolution—1080 × 1920 for S700 and S710, 720 × 1280 for BBPOS WisePOS E—or a GIF under 4 MB, which scales automatically. Set a custom admin passcode

Every reader uses the default admin passcode 07139 until your firm sets its own—Stripe recommends a custom five-digit passcode. The current passcode shows in the Admin menu passcode row on the location’s page. To set your own:

1. In your Stripe dashboard, go to Terminal > Locations and click the location.

2. Under Inherited configurations, click Override next to Admin menu passcode.

3. If this is the location’s first custom setting, enter a configuration name, then click Add.

4. Turn on the toggle, enter a five-digit passcode, then click Update.

5. Click Apply changes.

Users with the Super Administrator, Administrator, Terminal Specialist, or Developer role in Stripe can view the passcode; all of these except Developer can change it. More on setting the admin menu passcode .

Change the screen timeout to save battery

The screen timeout applies only when the reader isn’t connected to power—a reader that stays plugged in or on its dock keeps its screen on. If you carry the reader around, a shorter timeout saves battery. The default is 1 hour.

To change it, on the reader:

1. Swipe right from the left edge of the screen, then tap Settings.

2. Enter the admin passcode.

3. Tap Appearance, then pick a value from the Screen timeout dropdown.

The screen wakes when you touch it, pick it up, or start a payment, so a shorter timeout doesn’t slow down taking payments.

Reader care

• Keep the reader charged and connected to power when it’s not in use so it can receive software updates. The reader also restarts automatically once a day to stay up to date. A brief daily disconnect during this restart is normal.

• Keep the reader dry—it isn’t liquid-proof. If you prefer to keep it on the counter, use a compatible dock and stand.
