Use AI in tax return delivery

Note
AI in tax return delivery is part of the AI add-on , available to firms in the US.
When you create a tax return delivery , TaxDome AI can do the first pass for you: sort the pages into groups, fill out the tax summary and place signature fields. You review what AI prepared, fix anything it got wrong and send the delivery as usual. AI works with Form 1040 returns.
Each feature is turned on separately for the whole firm in Settings > Firm settings, on the TaxDome AI tab.
AI-assisted page grouping
TaxDome AI sorts the pages of the tax return into Highlights, Signature pages, and Payment vouchers in the Split full document into groups step, instead of you entering page numbers manually.
To set up page grouping:
-
Go to Settings > Firm settings and open the TaxDome AI tab.
-
In the Tax return delivery section, turn on Sort tax return into sections.
-
Under Active forms, review the forms AI sorts into Highlights, Signatures, and Payment vouchers. Click Select form to add a form, or click X next to a form to remove it. A form can belong to more than one section.
-
If AI doesn’t recognize a form you need, click Suggest a form to send TaxDome a request to add it.
When you create a delivery, AI reads the tax return in the background, usually for about two minutes. Meanwhile, you can set up the Intro and Invoice steps. When AI is done, a Review what AI prepared before sending banner appears, and each group AI filled in is marked AI. To change which forms AI adds to each group, click Change form settings in the Split full document into groups step.
If processing takes longer than two minutes, a Stop AI button appears in the banner. After you stop AI, you complete that delivery manually—AI won’t run on it again.
AI-assisted tax summary
TaxDome AI extracts key details from the tax return and fills out the tax summary —amount owed or refund, payment method, due dates, estimated payments, and estimated payment dates, for both federal and state—instead of you entering each field manually.
To turn it on, go to Settings > Firm settings > TaxDome AI and turn on Prefill tax summary. The What AI will extract list below the toggle shows the federal and state fields AI fills out.
If AI finds no payments in the tax return, the Tax summary step says so, and you can add taxes owed, estimated payments, or refunds manually.
To check where an amount comes from, click it—underlined amounts open the page of the tax return they come from.
If the due date for taxes owed has already passed, AI sets it to October 15 of the current year.
If AI finds conflicting amounts for the same payment across different source forms, or can’t determine a payment method, the summary flags it for review:
- Amount conflict: the card shows the amount from the higher-priority source, with an orange badge next to it.
- Default payment method: if AI can’t determine a payment method, it defaults to Authority portal, flagged with the same badge.
When flagged items exist, a Some items need your review block appears with Confirm all and Change payment methods buttons. Saving any card, or using either button, clears the flags on all cards. If you click Review & send while flagged items remain, you can choose to review them first or send anyway.
AI-assisted signature placement
TaxDome AI places signature fields on the forms in the Signature pages group using your signature templates , or TaxDome library templates if none match. To be matched, a template’s name must include the form number (e.g., 8879 with ERO or CA 8879). Signers are assigned in signer order .
To turn it on, go to Settings > Firm settings > TaxDome AI and select Place signature fields automatically in the Signatures section. It appears when Sort tax return into sections is on.
When AI is done, the Signature requests step shows a Signature fields placed by AI banner, and the signers are already selected. The Signature templates list shows each form AI found, with its pages and the template applied.
To apply a different template to a form:
- In the Signature templates list, click Change next to the form.
-
Open the template list and pick a template. You can search by form or authority. Each template shows its number of pages and signers, and whether it includes a firm member field.
-
Click Replace fields to confirm.
To clear the fields on a form, click X in its template field, then click Remove fields. If a form uses a TaxDome library template, click Copy & edit to save it to your firm’s templates and adjust it.
